CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Cassie poured the lemonade and excused herself to take a quick shower. When she came back down, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, she heard the slow strumming of guitar and Josh’s voice.

“That’s it. You’ve got it now.”

She walked in to see Josh standing behind Matt, who was playing guitar, while Joe sat trying to hide the fact he just took his fifth cookie from the plate Cassie put out, covering it with his palm.

She smiled at Josh. “What’s going on?”

“Uh...Matt said he was struggling with a few chords, so I thought I’d see if I could lend a hand.”

“Sounds good, Matt.” She looked on wistfully. “I wish I’d taken lessons when I was little, but my mom said it wasn’t ‘ladylike.’”

“You’re joking?”

“I wish I was.” The phone rang, interrupting her thoughts. “Hello?”

“Hey, this is Cheryl. Are Joe and Matt still?”

“Yes, they’re here.” Cassie turned around to see, belatedly, Matt and Joe signaling her to deny their presence to the caller, who, they must have already guessed, was their mom. She shrugged and mouthed, “Sorry,” to the boys.

“It was nice of Josh to help Matt with his guitar.”

Her eyes slid over to Josh. “Yes, it was nice of him.”

“Well, could you send those two knuckleheads down here? They have swimming practice in like fifteen minutes.”

“Oh, sure. I’ll send them...” Cassie had to turn her back to the boys to avoid laughing, as Matt and Joe began flailing wildly and mouthing, ‘NO!’ “...right down.”

“And you behave yourself with your little rock star.”

“I will. Bye.” She giggled and then hung the receiver up to a chorus of, “No way! That’s not fair! Oh, man! That stinks.”

“Sorry guys, she said you had swim practice.”

“Swim practice sucks,” Joe stated succinctly.

“That may be, but if I keep you guys here, she may not let you come again.”

After a lot of good-natured grumbles, the boys pushed their chairs back.

“Matt,” Josh asked, “could I borrow your guitar for a little while? I could run it back to your house later.”

“You’re gonna come to my house?” His eyes were wide as he grinned.

“If it’s okay with you.”

The smile on his face could have lit an entire neighborhood for a year. “Yeah, man. That would be cool.”

Once the boys hit the outside, they sprinted in a race for home. Josh and Cassie watched from the front door as Joe tried to jostle for position and lost his balance, falling, but rolling across his lawn. He hopped up quickly to put on a burst of speed to pass Matt, who stopped to make sure he was okay. They both disappeared into the depths of the garage at about the same time.

Josh, who stood behind Cassie, laughed. “Those are some nice kids.”

“They are,” she sighed with contentment. “The whole family is nice.”

Josh slid his arms around her waist, breathing in. “Mmm,” he groaned. “What kind of perfume do you wear?”

She giggled. “I don’t wear any. Why?”

“Cause the smell of you is driving me crazy.”

She squirmed as he kissed her neck. “Maybe it’s the honeysuckle body lotion I put on.
